Flash-Brewed Iced Coffee vs. Cold Brew

Whether you’re looking for cold coffee that's light and refreshing or strong and bold, we have the perfect brewing methods for you and your favorite beans.

How to Make Flash Brew

Steve Hoffman, The Head of our Workshop Roasting Program, shared this quick and easy recipe for his favorite Flash-Brewed Iced Coffee. All you need to do is brew a strong batch of coffee (we recommend Sun Chaser or Colombia San Roque ) and pour it over ice. This process creates a more delicate and nuanced coffee, with brighter acidity, a refreshingly light body, and more citrusy coffee notes shining through. It’s a perfect cold option for lighter roasts and single-origin coffees.

Making flash-brewed iced coffee at home is easy, all you have to do is:

  • Add 1-2 additional scoops of coffee to the amount you usually brew OR use a bit less water (no matter your brewing method)
  • Pour your freshly brewed, hot coffee over ice

Pro tip: Brew with our Chemex Coffeemaker and add ice to the bottom of your carafe before brewing so your coffee drips directly onto the ice during the brewing process.

How to Make Cold Brew

Cold Brew takes 12-24 hours to steep at room temperature, depending on desired taste and strength. The process creates a strong, dense batch of coffee with a fuller body that lets those more mellow, chocolatey flavors and sweetness shine. A great option for any coffee, but namely medium roasts and darker roasts with chocolatey, nutty profiles.
